Dog Beer: A Hydration Drink to Help Your Dog Replenish

Dogs – a woman’s best friend (and man’s too!), the loyal and trusted companion, a member of the family. As dog owners, we need to take care of our pups as we would any two-legged member of the family. Sometimes that means looking out for them in terms of what they eat and if they are drinking enough water. Do they get regular veterinarian visits? Are there any new lumps and bumps from last week’s leap off the couch?

As intelligent as they are, our four-legged family members must rely on us to fulfill their basic needs. Many dangers exist for dehydrated dogs so here are some helpful tips and information about water consumption, particularly in hot weather. July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month but it’s important to keep these things in mind year-round.

How Much Water Does Your Dog Need?

According to PetMD, most dogs should drink about an ounce of water for every pound of weight. For example, a 10-pound dog should drink a little over a cup of clean, fresh water daily. You don’t need to get the measuring cup out but it’s a good idea to know approximately how much water is required for your furry friend and to note if they are drinking more or less than they usually do. These are general guidelines based on the average dog but factors such as age, activity level and weather conditions also influence this number (For outstanding advice on keeping your dog hydrated, we recommend Dr. Karen Becker)

If you have a puppy still drinking its mother’s milk, less of their hydration needs will be met through water, according to AKC. A dog that eats dry food may need more water than one who eats canned food, as wet food is made up of 65-80% water. Dogs that are hot or exercising will need more water because there is water loss through panting and salivation. Panting is how your pup regulates its body temperature. Water also helps your dog’s metabolism because as blood, which is made up of water, flows through their body, it transports oxygen and cleans out harmful toxins.

What Are the Signs That Your Dog Needs a Hydrator?

Our four-legged friends need water to sustain their body functions and organs, just like humans. There are some easy ways to check if your dog is dehydrated (info from PetMD and AKC links above):

  • Feel the gums and see if they are dry, sticky, or pale
  • Dry nose and mouth
  • Eyeballs that appear dry and sunken into the face
  • Gently grab the skin behind your dog’s neck and pull up; skin should fall back into place quickly
  • Panting more than usual
  • Acting lethargic or low energy
  • Loss of appetite

Dogs may experience water loss through vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or excessive urination. Pay particular attention if your pup has been sick or is struggling with movement and pain as they may drink less water then, too, and are at risk for organ damage.

Energy Brew Is an Excellent Dog Hydrator

Some dogs will drink water all day long while others need some encouragement. Our Unleashed Hydrating Energy Brew is a great product to entice your furry friend back to their water bowl. Speaking of bowls, make sure it’s always clean (bacteria can quickly grow on them) and keep it filled with fresh water. Place bowls near where your dog eats, where they sleep, and at least one outside. In the winter, make sure you aren’t leaving a frozen bowl of water for your dog outdoors. If you have a dog that likes to crunch on ice cubes, fill a tray with water or bone broth in the freezer as a special treat. Even mixing a little dog brew into their dry food ups their water intake. Your dog might be interested in one of those bubbling water fountains and you could add energy brew instead of water for a tasty change of pace.

What Are the Ingredients of Dog Energy Brew?

Crafty Beasts Brewing Company offers “Unleashed Hydrating Energy Brew” with beneficial nutrients. It is a bone broth made of water, beef, carrots, blueberry juice and natural flavors and spices. Blueberries are considered a superfood because they are brimming with vitamins and minerals—antioxidants, vitamins C and K, calcium, potassium, and magnesium—to name a few. Potassium is an essential nutrient for dogs that are dehydrated as they are often low in potassium, chloride and sodium, which causes an imbalance of electrolytes. With fewer electrolytes, it lessens the ability of nutrients to get to a dog’s cells. As a result, blood circulation slows and there is less heart activity, which in turn starts to shut down organs. The brew also contains no alcohol or preservatives!

Where Can You Order Our Dog Hydrator Brew?

“Unleashed Hydrating Energy Brew” comes in four-packs and can be ordered online here. At the shop you can also buy some Crafty Beasts swag in the form of collapsible dog bowls, hats, toys, and kerchiefs. If you are looking to buy packs in person, there are stores across Canada selling the dog brew, from Halifax to New Brunswick, and Alberta to Ontario. A couple of pubs have even signed on to offer it on their patios in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Ontario. Now you can enjoy a cold one on those hot days and your furry friend can sit alongside on the terrace sipping their own frosty brew.
